Challenge yourself with a sketch!!!

I find one of the most useful tools in scrapbooking and cardmaking are sketches. In the near future I will try and link a number of places to go to for sketches. My favourite is Split Coast Stampers.

I used last Wednesdays weekly sketch SC169 for my card today. if you use this sketch, upload your image to the site here to share with others.

I love this sketch and the colours as well :) See the colour inspiration from this weeks colour challenge here... I have been dying to make a card with the other flower from the Bloomin' Beautiful stamp set in the new Occasions Mini.

Stamps: Bloomin' Beautiful (Occasions Mini)
Ink: Black Stazon, Basic Gray, Soft Sky, Mellow moss, Apricot Appeal
Paper: Whisper White, Basic Gray, Soft Sky, Soft Sky Prints Designer Series
Accessories: Soft Sky Double Stitched ribbon

Challenge yourself with colours!!!

Try to push your self to new levels with challenges... This is my favourite site bar none for inspiration... Challenges make you think outside the box...

Last weeks was CC158 Kraft (possible sub: Creamy Caramel), Sage Shadow, and Orchid Opulence. If you decide to use this colour combination, go to here to post your example. Here are the colours:

Split Coast Stampers Colour Challenge - CC159 -for this week is Soft Sky (bashful blue),
Basic Gray (basic black) and Whisper White. Again, post here and let me know what you do with it! look up in the gallery what others have done with this colour combo...

Here are the colours and see my sample I posted in the SC gallery in todays post...

Now you know where to go to inspire yourself with colour :)

March Stamper 6 Club

We did a scratch and sniff card with the new Tart & Tangy stamp set and Summer Picnic Designer Series paper from the Occasions Mini Catalogue. My good friend Lesley made fun of me because I suggested we do a second emboss to create more spleckles...

Stamps: Tart & Tangy (Occasions Mini)
Ink: Pumpkin Pie Craft, Versamark
Paper: Whisper White, Old Olive, Summer Picnic Designer Series
Accessories: Koolaid, Old Olive Poly Twill ribbon, 1 3/8 and 1 1/4" circle punches, Clear embossing powder

This card is almost straight out of the Occasions Mini catalogue. But the technique and look was perfect for the group and I thought it was gorgeous so... This stamp set is B-U-tiful!!!! Wish we could have used the other flower in the set today too but... only so much time and stuff to cover! We watercoloured with ink and did lots of grunging. I tried to get a detail shot so you could see the glitter...

Stamps: Bloomin' Beautiful (Occasions Mini)
Ink: Black Stazon, Basic Brown, Bashful Blue, Blue Bayou, Basic Black, Close to Cocoa, True Thyme (retired)
Paper: Confetti White, Kraft, Bashful blue
Accessories: Signo White gel pen, Lt blue gingham ribbon, spiral punch, pretties kit, Dazzling Diamonds, 2-way glue pen, Aqua Painter, water mister

This card I saw similar version somewhere in my internet wanderings. I really loved how the window had the same image stamped on it and knew Lesley would love it! We also edged the ribbon in colour to customize it. Here we placed the crayons onto the paper and spread with the Aqua Painter.

Stamps: A Little bit of Happiness (Hostess)
Ink: Black Stazon
Paper: Garden Green, Whisper White, acetate
Accessories: White grosgrain ribbon, Aqua Painter, scotch tape, Watercolour Wonder Crayons Rich Regals

This card was everyone favourite because it is so easy and fast, yet it looks so great in the end. We painted the watercolour right onto the stamp, misted and pressed into the watercolour paper. We flicked and sponged to grunge it up. I think this is one of the most versatile stamp sets. Love it!!!!

Stamps: Live Your Dream (Occasions Mini)
Ink: Basic Brown
Paper: Watercolour paper, Chocolate Chip
Accessories: White grosgrain ribbon, Aqua Painter, water mister, Watercolour Wonder Crayons Earth Elements, Bronze Brads

Making the Most of the Close the Loop Kit

I had been thinking of these kits and batches for along time. I had done the three at Christmas and just loved them see here. This particular one was definitely inspired by Patty though as she is amazingly talented and you may want to look at her examples here and here.... Because she was so thorough I was able to explain to you better how to utilize this product better. Thanks Patty!

As promised here are as many samples as I could use cardstock from The Close the Loop Kit. There were still tons of left over stickers and designer paper. As most of my gals are new and do not have tons of stamps I opted for simplicity with a lot of rub ons and using just a few punches ... 17 cards from the kit.... almost exactly what I promised in the write up here...

And as I had asked you to open your minds in a prior email this kit from SU! is a wedding kit... but all of these cards could be used for multiple occasions and the kit definitely does not limit itself to wedding cards and layouts. Little tricks like punching out areas of the stickers that were wedding and keeping the image of a flower.... And my favourite twist "I do, I do.... love you... Now you try ;)

Stamps: So Many Scallops (I just love this set - too bad ladies it is retired now- maybe they will bring into next catalogue)
Ink: Chocolate Chip
Paper: Simply Scrappin Tie the Knot (DS paper, 12x12 Chocolate Chip, Certainly Celery, Very Vanilla, Kraft, 3 sheets of self-adhesive die cuts)
Accessories: various rub ons (all SU! retired and current including the ones from the Occasions Mini and cherished memories) white Signo pen, Stylized Hodge Podge, rhinestone brads, Chocolate Chip poly twill ribbon, twill ribbon, Vanilla, White & Chocolate Chip Taffeta ribbon, Certainly Celery 1/4” grosgrain ribbon, retired satin chocolate chip ribbon, Scallop Punch, 1 3/8" and 1" Circle Punch, word window punch, 5-petal flower punch, designer label punch, small oval punch, clear micro beads

Now, can you see how endless the possibilities are with this SU! kit????? I did not even get to stamps which opens up hundreds of new ideas - plus I limited myself as much as possible to the kit so you can easily duplicate the look. I just scratched the surface! And any Simply Scrappin Kit is about the same with its options. With the
Simply Scrappin Kit you can make twice as many cards but my kit "The Close the Loop Kit" you get ribbon, embellishments and punches too....

Don't forget to let me know what you create with this set...

March Kits - Images

I received the stock for the March kits, so here are pictures. Hope you love as much as I do. Examples to follow soon from the kits... NOTE: the little squares with 1 1/2" cuts of the patterned paper are a sampling to show you the related patterns that will come in each 6x12" Designer Series paper set. Click Here for the original posting and the pricing!

Summer Fun
(Only available until May 31st as mostly from the Occasion Mini catalogue)

Tea Time
(Only available until May 31st as mostly from the Occasion Mini catalogue)

Close the Loop

Points to keep in mind as you look at this kit and then see the examples I post, is that it comes from a scrapbook kit but is great for cards AND, it is a wedding set but there are so many non wedding things you can do with it too - it is really an extraordinary set!

Disclaimer Note: these kits are not pre-ordered and assembled as that would be a conflict of the SU! Stampin’ Up! Cash and Carry Policy. Because I am assembling them from products ordered at the time of customer order, they are, like all merchandise, applicable to normal tax and SH rates. All other standard policies are applicable (see back of invoice). It is only in multiple purchases I am able to do these kits and break up the individual packages. All merchandise in kit is current product- nothing is discontinued.

Tutorial: Making A Card (Basic)

For very beginners, this tutorial will show you how to make your cards at home, yourself.

Supplies:

  • paper cutter (I own the SU! Table Top Paper Cutter and there are a variety of options out there including the SU! Paper Cutter)
  • Piece of cardstock 8 1/2" x 11" or 12" x 12" (will cover both sizes below)
  • Scoring tool; basically something to score or fold the card in half (I own a Scor-It and SU! Bone Folder and vary depending on quantity of cards I am making; you can also use the SU! Paper Cutter with a scoring blade)

Cutting a standard A2 Card Base

The standard card size is called A2 and measures 4 1/4" x 5 1/2". It is made from 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock, preferably of a good weight like the SU! cardstock.

1. Place the 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock in the paper cutter, lining up at 5 1/2" mark as shown

2. Slide blade down carefully to ensure that the paper does not move. The SU! Table Top Cutter has a guide that holds paper in place. (notice my hands holding the plastic guide down)

3. You are left with two pieces of paper measuring 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"

A2 cards can be orientated horizontally or vertically as shown here...

Cutting a Top-Fold A2 Card Base

The Top-Fold A2 card also measures 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" and is made from 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock.

1. Place the 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock in the paper cutter, lining up at 4 1/4" mark as shown

2. Slide blade down

3. You are left with two pieces of paper measuring 11" x 4 1/4"

These images show how they look lying horizontally or vertically.

Cutting a 4x4 Square Card Base

The 4" x 4" card is most economically made from 12" x 12" cardstock.

1. Cut the 12" x 12" cardstock in the paper cutter, lining up at 4" mark as shown in first image

2. Take the smaller piece and cut off 4" (lining up at 8") as shown to leave you a 8" x 4" piece

3. Cut the remaining larger piece at the 4" and 8" marks as shown

4. The scrap 4x4 piece is great used to punch shapes for use as embellishments on your cards so set it aside in a scrap paper pile

Scoring your cards

Method 1: Bone Folder

I believe this is the most accurate for a small amount of cards.

1. Line up your corners as per the following sizing and images

2. Smooth bone folder along the centre to crease the card into two equal halves

Card Size
Score Point
Standard A2 4 1/4"
Top-Fold 5 1/2"
4 x 4 4"

Method 2: Scoring Blade

1. Place card into slide style cutter such as the SU! Paper Cutter (sorry I do not own at this point so no pictures)

2. Line up up cardstock at appropriate mark (see chart above) and gently slide scoring blade all the way down (ensure you are applying gentle pressure so that you do not cut through the cardstock)

Method 3: Score-It or other bulk scoring tool

1. Line up your cardstock piece at appropriate mark (see chart above)

2. Pull scoring tool along the centre to crease the card into two equal halves

When folding your cards, always fold towards the peak side (look carefully at the photos below):

I always go over the folded crease again with the bone folder for my personal cards, even if I have used the score it, but I am my own worst critic and it is not necessary :)

NOTE:
Cardstock has a directional grain to it. Therefore it is stronger in one direction than the other. In general, a trick to knowing the best direction to fold cardstock is if you start like you are going to fold, the direction that is easiest and does not fight you is the best way to fold...

Optional: Create Card Front

1. Cut your card stock in the following sizes

Card Size Score Point
Standard A2 4" x 5 1/4"

How to Make the Most of the Close the Loop Kit or Any Simply Scrappin Kit...

The Close the Loop Kit is very convenient as it is half a Tie the Knot Simply Scrappin Kit with added ribbon and accessories. You just need a few stamps... You can make 12 textured and 6 kraft cards at least from the Close the Loop!!! But I am going to show you how to use either the kit we will be using "Close the Loop" or ANY Simply Scrappin kit from Stampin' Up! Here is a picture out of the catalogue of the Tie the Knot Simply Scrappin Kit - it is beautiful & versatile!!! See me for more information!

Click on image to see larger and more clearly (I have no idea why all fuzzy)...
The way the Simply Scrappin Sets are designed, you can easily make 24 textured and 12 kraft cards with each kit. The cards are 4x4 and fit into the standard envelopes. This is how you can do it too:

1) cut each 12x12 textured cardstock and kraft cardstock as shown on solid lines and fold on dotted lines as shown (also see Card Cutting Tutorial):

Each 12x12 paper yields 4 4x4 cards and a left over 4x4 piece.

2) Cut the patterned paper similar to following (you may wish to alter for your own designs but this will give you many beautiful cards!!!):

3) Use the 4x4 pieces to punch out shapes such as scallops and circles

4) Stamp imagery, attach ribbon and put together your designs from the pieces... easy!!!! See my examples for ideas if you wish :)

Here are some stamp sets and embellishments I think would look nice with this kit:
